Secrets of Atlanta is a public art project created for Flux Projects in 2011, based on an earlier collaboration with Christopher Baker at the University of Minnesota in 2005 (click here to view collaboration). Secrets of Atlanta involves several phases. First, the public collection of anonymous secrets from a variety of locations throughout Atlanta via lock boxes- no names taken, no trails from the post office or the internet, no handwriting analysis. Once the secrets are collected and sorted (yes, the overly offensive written for offensive sake are omitted), they are printed on tri-fold paper towels. You know, the kind you use in public restrooms. Then, you guessed it, the towels are dispersed in multiple public restrooms around the city for unsuspecting (or suspicious) viewers.
A select number of secrets (about 200) are embroidered on vintage handkerchiefs to create a more permanent record of the collection. Some of the handkerchiefs were created during public sewing circles and others were made in the privacy of our homes. Our = Jes Schrom and Graham Simpson, Brooke Humphreys, Jan Humphreys, and Ashley Schick.
