-The United States won its first gold medal in the men’s combined event- the downhill and two slalom runs- at the Turin Olympics, but hardly in the way it expected.

-Bode Miller held a commanding lead after the downhill, but he was disqualified for missing a gate, above, in his first run. Ted Ligety (No. 18, at right), in his second season of international racing, vaulted from 32nd place after the downhill to win the gold medal. Ivica Kostelic of Croatia (No. 20) won silver and Rainer Schoenfelder of Austria (No. 9) took bronze.

-Vice President Dick Cheney on Capitol Hill yesterday.

-Officers from the Sixth Precinct held their annual Valentine’s Day party at the Our Lady of Pompei Senior Center in Greenwich Village. With a shortage of elderly men in attendance, the men in uniform stood in.
