Jes Schrom received a BA in Visual Arts from Minnesota State University Moorhead and an MFA from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis). Her artwork has been exhibited at Soo Visual Arts Center (Minneapolis, MN), University of Wisconsin (LaCrosse), Ceres Gallery (New York, NY), Torpedo Factory Art Center (Alexandria, VA), Bejing Film Academy (China), and the North Dakota Museum of Art (Grand Forks), among others. Schrom joined Louisiana Tech University’s School of Art (Ruston) as Assistant Professor of Photography in 2008. She also serves on the Board of the Society for Photographic Education: South Central Region as Secretary and Newsletter Editor, the Twin City Art Foundation/Masur Museum as Vice President, and is the Director of the Louisiana Tech University School of Art galleries.
Regardless of media, my photographs, videos, sculptures, and embroidery invariably come back home: analyzing my role within family history, current relationships, and society. Much of my work references the history of female artistic and domestic practices by using repetitive, methodical processes and materials categorized as feminine. Combined with personal contemporary experiences and imagery, the processes and materials take on new meaning and strength. My work also combines humor with heartache, intimacy with detachment, destruction with regret. These contrasting emotions, and all that lies between, reflect the complexity of our connections to others, humanity, and most importantly, our self.
