STATEMENT

As a child, I often came home after school to an empty house and had several hours of unrestricted play before my mother arrived from work. From assembling complex environments to devising narratives, I subconsciously used the act of play to comprehend the world around me. Everyday experiences and the impulses of childhood guided my after school constructions. Often times, characters represented actual people in my life. Surrounded by the stories of my own making, I was able to feel the presence of others in spite of the fact that I was completely alone. The act of creation-as-connection continues to be a significant influence.

As an adult, my artistic practice enables me to have interactions that would not exist otherwise. The act of producing an art work from others’ contributions, presence, or even the memory of them, intensifies my connection and reserves a quiet space for exploration. The process of creation itself becomes more intimate and revealing for me than our everyday exchanges.

Art making allows me to mull over our common struggles and achievements with unconventional results. Humor, heartache, intimacy, detachment, destruction, and regret often fuse together. The very act of creating something, whether it be an object or an idea, moves beyond typical associations. My work is frequently a collaboration or manifestation of my contact with others. Projects oscillate between collective group works requesting the trust and participation of the public to private investigations alone in the studio. Using labor-intensive and repetitive actions, it is the process that remains the most fundamental aspect of my practice and regularly functions as an homage to these distinctly human experiences and emotions.

Regardless of media, my photographs, videos, drawings, sewings, and installations invariably come back home: analyzing my role within family history, relationships, and society. Although my works span a variety of techniques they all exist within these conceptual territories. Each project is the result of material drawn from others resulting in a range of approaches tailored to fit the experience. Often what is left is a gesture that uses process as a way to examine and understand my connection to others while the physical evidence of those processes reflect the simultaneous complexity and simplicity of what it means to be human.
